Dragon Spine Canopy

Designed to be situated in the most vibrant area of Shanghai, this canopy is planned to be over 900 meter long, passing through a dynamic retail area and leading to the waterfront area of the Huangpu River. Starting from the client's requirement of a stunning experience, this study explored possible forms that create a dramatic atmosphere for the visitors. Using mesh relaxation, the canopy was shaped into three levels connected by helical staircases. From the second level visitors can enter the retail stores on both sides. The third level has platforms that can be used as resting or lookout areas. The locations of the openings on the canopy are related to the degrees of the curvatures.
